CERVICAL CANCER KILLS ONE WOMAN EVERY TWO MINUTES
Cervical cancer is the number one cause of cancer death for women in low-resource settings, worldwide. In the developed world, women ages 20-60 undergo routine cervical cancer screening at their gynecologist or gynecological clinic. According to the American Association of Family Physicians (AAFP), approximately 55 million women per year have a Pap Smear in US, and approximately 4 million women per year (in US) have abnormal Pap result and advance to Colposcopy, in which the cervix is imaged.
But this isn't the case worldwide. It is estimated by the World Health Organization that 85% of women worldwide do not have adequate access to such screening, which leads to the fact that out of the 527,000 women diagnosed with cervical cancer every year, 275,000 will die - a tragedy because cervical cancer takes 20 years to develop, and can be treated for less than $28 and in less than 40 minutes if caught in the first 5 years.
Great work has been done by a non-governmental organizations, such as those founding members of Cervical Cancer Action, to highlight this challenge, and we believe that our technology can build on this impressive policy focus to enable better, more reliable tools to empower community health workers currently screening with Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) to vastly improve the positive predictive value of their diagnosis to reduce over-treatment and the pain and cost-overruns that result from low specificity.
